Taj Mahal : Agra (Uttar Pradesh)

The Taj Mahal situated in the heart of Agra city, UP is one of the Seven Wonders of the World. This was the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, son of Emperor Jahangir and grandson of Akbar the great and his beloved wife was Queen Mumtaz Mahal. Mumtaz Mahal was the Persian princess and formally known as Arjumand Begum.

Mumtaz Mhal died in the year 1631 while giving birth to their 14th child, and thereafter in her memory the monument was created. The construction of Taj Mahal began in the year 1631 and completed in 1653, approximately 22 years. This epitome was created with the services of 22,000 labours and white marble, and masons, stonecutters, painters, artists etc were engaged from India, central Asia and Iran. It is said approximately 32 million rupees were spent for this monument. Historians also claim that Shah Jahan cut hand of his labours after the completion of this monument, so such monument can never be recreated. After the death of Shah Jahan, he lies entombed in this mausoleum along with his wife. And today, people from across the world visit the place to witness the monument of love.

By air, is perhaps the fastest way of reaching TajMahal. The city of Taj, Agra, has its own airport that is around 7 km from the city center.

There is a good network of trains connecting Agra with the rest of the country. The main trains connecting Agra with Delhi are Palace on Wheels, Shatabdi, Rajdhani, and Taj Express.

There are regular buses services from Agra to a number of important cities, and one can easily travel through road also.
